NEW HORIZONS FOR A GROWING COUNTRY AND JOINING VG DEVELOPMENT TRAIN
For many years now Brazil has been under the eye of international economics critics, as the country has been constantly growing by betting on markets that more conservative governments have left on the side before.
Technology truly is a gold mine if you have the right tools and talent to exploit it, Brazil knows this and this is the main reason why the government has been investing in specialized training for those who want to learn about video games development and programming.
Just last August, in a very smart and sharp move, the Public Communications Office (MCP) announced a project offering grants for games and app developers, the MCP would give each winning app a whopping prize of $25,000 usd, while games are getting $31,000 usd, a sum that can be very tempting and most of all: motivating.
The total number of grants can be as many as 25, this assures that only top quality products will be delivered. Of course the government is smart and among their most important conditions is that if someone wants their app or game to be considered for this grant, the product must be “Universal compatible” (Cross platform), meaning more users can access the app or game and this can be translated into more revenue.
Another interesting fact about this initiative is the fact that those apps and games that include educational content have a better chance to earn the grant, this speaks a lot about the vision from the country and its authorities by creating a deal in which everybody wins $$$.
ESTÁCIO FIC TO CONQUER BRAZILIAN NORTHWEST
Even when Brazil is becoming a prolific country, it doesn ́t mean that poverty has been solved, it is known that a big part of the country still suffers from this disease and different initiatives has been undergone in order to solve this issue.
Estácio Fic is a faculty part of this area and a few years ago it received MEC ́s recognition for its Digital Games Technology course. The training lasts 3 years and receives 200 new students every year since 2008. This has been a great add-on for both the country and the local market.
FACULDADE DOM BOSCO “DESENVOLVIMENTO DE JOGOS”
Even already high profile and well known institutions are seeing VGs a new way to expand their educational offer and to join an ever growing market, this is the case of Dom Bosco ́s Faculty (Faculdade Dom Bosco) that is offering a very well rounded program on Video Games Development.
A Post-Grade lasting only one year but one packed with useful information and practices that will allow the student to start its own developing career by learning both basics and advanced tactics to join the market. 408 hours total offering to form professionals capable of working in top projects by giving them all tools needed to start their own VG development path.
From Project Management to full 3D Animation, Audio Production and of course Unity 3D. This last element is the reason why I am including Faculdade Dom Bosco in this article as for Unt3Dmag is very important to put emphasis on projects and/or institutions promoting the engine as their software of choice and educating new developers in it. Every course block is divided in to 36 hours cycles, meaning that every student taking part of this Post-Grade will be spending more that a day learning how to use Unity to develop games for Android, Windows and iOS. At the end of the course each student is intended to deliver a fully playable game and, who knows? It could be our next mobile blockbuster.
UNIVERSIDADE ANHEMBI MORUMBI
To finish our educational tour around the tropical areas from Brazil, we have the University Anhembi Morumbi, another institution offering a very complete Game Design program among their professional training courses. Considered by the Student ́s Guide from 2013 one of the best training courses available. This program aims to deliver excellence and top quality classes, innovative and is a pioneer in its field, this program has received great critics from the experts.
Anhembi Morumbi University was the first institution to launch a Video Game Design program in Brazil and with this advantage as they are always polishing their offerings. Professional practices are guaranteed when students enrol themselves into the program and the University has seen many graduates working as professionals in the field, including top video game designers and developers in the area. This program allows students to work in other fields in which 3D animation can be used, like culture, arts and entertainment business.
QUBYTE AND OTHER GAME STUDIOS IN BRAZIL
I’ve said enough about institutions and educational offers in the field, now it is time to talk about Game Studios and I want to start with QUByte. I came across this VG development studio while doing my research and was fascinated by their latest game: HTR+. As their website says: “QUByte Interactive is a video game development studio by an experimented and skilful team” To this I ́ll add “passionate”, as you can see it in the work they put on their titles. I started talking about HTR+ one of the released games by this studio, the game is a car racing game. What makes it different from other games like it is the fact that instead of fast and expensive cars you will be racing Slot Cars in a colourful and fast paced environment.
The concept is very original and physics have been achieved with great detail, the game has reached such popularity that Nintendo America has approved a development port so its predecessor: HTR can be offered for the Nintendo DS. Just as a quick fact, the game has almost reached over 8 million downloads, a great accomplishment for an indie studio, a great example that things can be achieved with perseverance and hard work.
This game can be purchased for $19.99
JYNX PLAYWARE AND THE MONEY MAKING MACHINE
Video Games are a great source of entertainment and one of the favourite things to do when you need to kill some time, several titles are available offering all sorts of game styles and genres but, what else can we do with video games?
Well, someone inside Jynx Playware asked themselves this very question and the very simple answer was money. This Brazilian studio specializes in one thing, creating games for brands in order to promote products.
Yes, I know, it is really smart and potential has been seen by worldwide brands, like Coca-Cola. This is a great example on how video games can serve as marketing channels, not just games and how different business models can be applied to the field, what do you think?
AQUIRIS, PLAY WITH US
Aquiris Game Studio is all about innovation and creating fun and action packed games that are easily taken by players and turned into favourites. Among their 2014 released titles we have Ballistics, an online FPS that will keep you busy hunting for foes to eradicate.
The Great Prank War I, was another title mixing humour and well known characters from the Cartoon Network ́s show. Aquiris has grown its business with this licencing deal from the TV channel. They have also developed another title for the network, Ben 10 Wrath of Psychobos.
And finally, for DreamWorks, they have released “Dragons Wild Skies”.
All of these titles of course, have been developed on Unity.
Aside of these main studios there are a lot of newcomers getting ready to become the greatest protagonists of this Brazilian video gaming tale and in the next couple of years I can be sure that we will be hearing a lot from the Amazonic country. With dedicated institutions, eager students, federal programs promoting the industry and passionate game developers, many great titles will see the light and for sure will become classics among players. I ́m happy to see how the video game development industry grows around the world and how new countries are arriving and are being able to offer top quality products getting both brands and big studios attention and trust.
How Brazil will evolve as a VG development country, only time will tell but for now I highly recommend you to try a few games from the studios we have discussed here, see for yourself the quality, innovation and passion that is very evident in each studios works. If one day Brazilians can create games as well as they can play soccer, well the world will have a real winner.
Remember that excellence can only be achieved with dedication and training, don ́t stop yourself from learning new skills and don ́t be afraid to share your creations, don ́t fear criticism and use it as a tool to polish your ideas, keep on reading Unt3Dmag and have fun!
